Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is an amorphous polymer obtained by polymerization in an emulsion or mass of acrylonitrile and styrene in the presence of polybutadiene. The most important properties of ABS are impact resistance and fracture toughness. ABS is produced either unpainted or colored in mass.
ABS is usually characterized by three main properties:
- Flowability
- Heat resistance
- Shock resistance
Styrene monomer gives ABS good processability, acrylonitrile provides its rigidity, thermal and chemical resistance, and butadiene makes the final product more shockproof and elastic even at low temperatures. The change in the percentage of ABS components and the addition of special additives makes it possible to obtain different grades of this product with special properties. ABS has insufficient resistance to weathering and is therefore recommended for use only in enclosed spaces.
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, as a rule, can be used in the temperature range from -20 °C to +80 °C. ABS is resistant to dilute acids, alkalis, concentrated hydrochloric and phosphoric acid, alcohols and fats of animal, vegetable and mineral origin, but can be eaten by concentrated sulfuric and nitric acid. Acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) is soluble in esters, ketones, ethylene dichloride and acetone.
ABS can be processed using injection molding and extrusion molding.
Typical areas of application of Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) include:
- General purpose: toys, consumer goods, telephones, safety helmets
- Automotive: interior door panels, racks, seat upholstery, grilles, instrument panels, mirror housings
- Household appliances: housings of kitchen equipment, casings of vacuum cleaners, control panels of large household electrical appliances
- Molded products: thin-sheet materials, shower trays, tractor roofs, furniture edges, internal chambers of refrigerated cabinets, suitcases
