High Impact Polystyrene - HIPS is a durable, lightweight and at the same time rigid sheet plastic (high-quality polystyrene). HIPS is an amorphous material, a copolymer of styrene with polybutadiene and other rubbers. HIPS has a high resistance to shock, chemical resistance to solutions of weak acids and alkalis, also to hydrolysis, has high frost resistance, good electrical insulating properties. In modern light structures, he replaced the previously used plexiglass. High impact polystyrene is the most popular molding thermoplastic, it is easily amenable to change by a hot vacuum method.
The introduction of flame retardants makes it possible to increase the material's hardness class from HB to V = 0, which makes it possible to use it in the manufacture of switches, sockets and other electrical products. The material is absolutely safe when interacting with food. Adding UV stabilizers makes HIPS resistant to UV radiation. The lightfastness of the material is enhanced by special additives to the composition.
The main ways of processing:
The main methods of processing HIPS are injection molding, extrusion and co-extrusion with polystyrene for general use. High impact polystyrene has a low shrinkage, it is well compatible with anti-adhesion additives.
Main fields of application:
The main areas of application of this plastic are the manufacture of cases of electrical appliances, parts of car parlors, vacuum containers, office supplies, sanitary ware. HIPS is also used in the production of business cards, toys, packaging and utensils for the food industry, cosmetics packaging, shower cabins, apartment partitions, finishing materials in construction, etc.
