PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) - In terms of its chemical composition, it is a saturated polyester of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. PET thermoplastic polymer, which is the most common among polyesters.
Characteristics of PET:
By physical properties, PET is a white solid without odor. It is strong, tough and lightweight material. PET material has transparency, high strength, good ductility (both in the heated state and cold), chemical resistance. This material can be processed by drilling, sawing, milling. All its characteristics PET material retains and at low temperatures, up to -40 °C, and at high, up to +75 °C. PET has a high chemical resistance to gasoline, oils, fats, alcohols, ether, dilute acids and alkalis. Polyethylene terephthalate is insoluble in water and many organic solvents. It is unstable to ketones, strong acids and alkalis. Has increased resistance to the action of water vapor. PET minimally adsorbs odors and exhibits the properties of a good gas barrier.
Advantages of PET:
- High strength and rigidity
- High creep resistance
- High surface hardness
- Well polished
- High transparency - up to 80%, which makes it possible to manufacture products that simulate glass
- High resistance to deformation
- Good property of sliding friction and wear resistance
- Good electrical insulating properties
- High resistance to chemicals
Disadvantages of PET:
- Average dielectric properties
Application of PET:
Polyethylene terephthalate is processed by injection molding and extrusion. Fibers and thin films of PET are extruded with cooling at room temperature. The degree of crystallinity can be regulated by annealing at a certain temperature between the glass transition temperatures Tc and the melting point Tm; The maximum rate of crystallization is reached at -170 °C.
PET injection molding produces mainly preforms for PET bottles. For these purposes, the traditional scheme of plastic casting is rather rarely used: injection molding machine + injection mold. In modern realities, the ball is ruled by special complexes for the production of PET preforms, including everything necessary for intensive production of products: high-speed injection molding machines, complex press molds, refrigerators, robot systems.
PET finds a variety of applications due to a wide range of properties, as well as the ability to control its crystallinity. The main application is related to the manufacture of PET containers, in particular bottles for carbonated beverages, since PET has remarkable barrier properties. In this case, the amorphous PET undergoes biaxial stretching above Tc, to create crystallinity.
Other applications of PET include textile fibers, electrical insulation and products obtained by blow molding.
Examples of PET products include: car body parts; The body of sewing machines; Handles of electric and gas stoves; Details of engines, pumps, compressors; Electrotechnical details; Various connectors; Medical devices; Packing from PET; PET-preforms and much more.
